So varied, so great, it's like having five albums in one. A wonderful, warm, percussive album. Again, another proof of Eno's mastery of pop melody crafting.
"No one receiving" has a hot, percussion and bass-driven tune, a bit world beat, that all drinks itself smoothly. A great opener. "Backwater"'s amazingly poppy and new wave for its time. Very present synths, sounds almost like 1986! (reminder: this album got out in 1977) Still listenable, incredibly. There are so many innovations brought upon by Eno, that even the crappiest distortions of his craft (synths, talentless sampling, etc.) sound great when HE uses it!
"Kurt's Rejoinder" begins by a very weird bass line, something that, again, doesn't sound out of place at all in 2001 (namely on a Roni Size drum n' bass cd, almost)
"King's Lead Hat" (a word play on Talking Heads, a then-current project collaboration of Eno) is by far the rocker of the cd, my favorite. It has such a super-jerky quality, it almost sounds like Devo!
Some very moody, very evocative semi-instrumentals, such has Energy Fools The Magician" and "Julie with..." soothe and bring the album down to more completed one, instead of a collection of novelty sounds (although it would still have its merits that way).
Again the lyrics make zero sense, they are more a sound collection, like the human voice is just another instrument. Eno's progression from his "Here Come the Warm Jets" is evident. This album is one of his most accomplished, in my mind. The rockier elements are replaced by more melodic, more nuanced pieces that seek to create an harmony instead of trying to bring the roof down.
Perfect, ageless music (perfect pop!)
